Welcome to the very first "Alphabet of the Month!" I find so many inspiring examples of lettering online, I thought it would be great to document some of my favorite alphabets I discover. You may have seen Alice Mourou's Blossom Type on Pinterest, I know I have, but it's great to see the entire alphabet together. Take a look at her website for an even better glimpse into the process that went into creating these letterforms.
Sign Painters The Movie
This past Friday I joined several of my co-workers and went to AIGA KC's screening of Sign Painters: The Movie. I truly recommend this film to anyone who has an interest in hand-lettering, or documentaries in general. It was fascinating to not only watch the sign painters in the film execute their craft, but also to hear their commentary on this traditional skill. Take a look at the trailer for the movie posted below:
Jessica Hische Forever Stamp
I love this interview with Jessica Hische about the lettering she created for the USPS. Perhaps this will be the stamp I use when sending out our wedding invitations... take a look!
Alternative Medicine Poster
Here is a look at the poster I designed for Dale's radio show! To take in all the details here is the link to the full project.
Drop Cap Battle
Tonight I was able to participate in KU Design Week's Drop Cap Battle. Led by the lovely Amber Goodvin, two people were each assigned the same letter and had to create competing drop caps in one hour. Below is the letter G I created, and I will soon receive a copy of a zine featuring every letterform created at the workshop!
Dana Tanamachi
Last night in my hand lettering class I was formally introduced to the work of Dana Tanamachi. WIthout a doubt I have seen her chalk lettering before, but her website and collection of work is truly inspiring. I found her recent personal project entitled Flourish to be especially beautiful. I found it fascinating to witness the scale at which she creates her lettering, and wonderful to be able to watch her process. Photos by Eric Ryan Anderson and Andrew Ryan Shepherd.
